If you want to make a real difference in the life of a person who honestly needs your help, ARCCorps is a program you should learn more about.

The ARCCorps program recruits volunteers to serve as guardians and advocates for people with developmental disabilities who lack the capacity to decide for themselves, or make choices, or understand the consequences of their choices.

An ARCCorps volunteer is matched with an individual who has been specifically identified by the Developmental Disabilities Services Division of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services as needing the kind of support that a guardian or an advocate can provide.

As a volunteer, you are trained and supported throughout this relationship by ARCCorps coordinators to develop the knowledge and skills you need to perform your role. Special assistance is given during the process of establishing a legal guardianship.

An ARCCorps volunteer is a consistent friend of a person with developmental disabilities -- and all that implies: a source of advice and affection; a watchdog over the state’s system of services for its citizens with disabilities; often, the only person in this individual’s life who is not paid to be there.

You are there because you care, either in the role of advocate who helps the individual enjoy a high quality of life or as a guardian with the legal power to help that individual make life decisions.
